Epidemic

On May 16th, 2006, Torri Wightman died in a daytime car

accident as a result of wet roads, speed, and hydroplaning.  If the girl driving Torri’s car had taken an advanced driving course, there is a 95% chance Torri would be alive today.

Unintentional injuries account for more teenage deaths (ages 15 to 20) than all other categories combined (murder, suicide, birth defects, cancer, heart disease and asthma)!!  Within that category itself,  motor vehicle accidents account for 6,367 deaths in the 2004 NCIPC report, followed by 870 by poisoning, 371 by drowning, 169 by transport other than automobile, 132 by falling, 105 by firearm, 81 by suffocation, 80 by fire, and 79 not specified.  In fact, unintentional injury (of which the highest percentage are motor vehicle accidents) totals approximately 47,000 through the age of 44, when cancer then predominates.

This kind of teenage death is epidemic according to the statistics.

Several months ago, with funds from Torri’s Memorial Fund at the South Shore Charter Public School in Norwell, students were given an opportunity to take the Advanced Driver Training at the Weymouth Air Force Base.  This should be a mandatory, full-force legislation with no watering down whatsoever.

when you ride in someone's car tell them to drive safely - - protect each other

I hadnt seen you since 9th grade haven't talked to you since middle school and hadnt heard your laugh since i dont know how little we were. But I just cant stop thinking about you. You're in my dreams every night and you're in my heart and head every day. All my love goes to the ones who knew your jokes, hugged you everyday, and were close enough with you to argue. I wish I could have ran into you in boston or cambridge or saw you in the supermarket and got to say "holy shit, torri!how are you?" I have only a few memories of you, and they're enough to make me cry when i look and this website and when i listen to your music. I can't even imagine....I dont know, I just wish I could have made one more memory with you. Since you've been gone I havent once forgotten to buckle up or forgotten to remind another person im with to. I havent forgotten to smile either and try harder to enjoy my life becuase even though you left your life here so young, you didn't waste it.I'll never forget you and i hope you know that i love you. -tara

Lucy, i just was looking at Torris web site and saw the Dont ever forget page. Good for you ,how brave of you to show all how brutal and raw this all is. These kids need to understand they are driving a lethal weapon. drivers ed does NOT teach them this. most parents dont teach them that either.most parents just shove them out the door and are glad they are out of their hair. believe me i know i have taken in many kids, mostly in summer when parents dont want to be bothered.and these are wonderful kids!!! the world is so screwed up!! My 21 year old waited until the age of 18 and said it saved lives after losing 8 friends in cars and what a brutal way to learn. My other child will not get a license til age 18 and i feel there is enough maturity and respect. my thoughts will be with you tomorrow at 3:00. God love you and ease some of your suffering.thank you for voicing what is sooo brutal, maybe it will save a few. You will not get any negative notes from me. You speak the truth, no matter how blunt. Ive seen the nasty comments...and it seems that the brutal truth is too much for them. I thought how people can be so cruel, so selfish. these people have no right to be angry at you. You on the other hand have every right to feel angry, lost, hurt, raw at all this. None of it is right. No one needs tell another how to grieve. Dont overwhelm yourself.Do try and take it slow.

A Mom
